IAMC Best of... 2022

John: Today’s album is generally considered to be one of greatest live albums of all time. Recorded in the refectory at Leeds Uni. That must have been one hell of a gig, regardless of what you think of The Who…

Scott: I’m not a huge fan of live albums generally. Like hearing about a party you couldn’t attend! I did quite enjoy this though on my first listen. They do sound really tight.

Dave: Really like this one, I’ve seen the who live (as old men) , loud and some band - must have been immense back in their heyday.

Matt: This really did zero for me (actually less than zero - some of it actively annoyed me). Think it’s the Moon ‘hit-every-drum-as-many-times-as-possible’ style that bugs me most, but it’s all just a bit too self-important.

Matt: AND they ripped off that Fatboy Slim riff for “Can’t Explain”. 😀

Dave: The Keith Moon style is definitely unique (and self indulgent). When I saw them it was Ringo’s boy on the drums, he was good.

Scott: [replying to his own request for albums of the year] Ahem…

Scott: This got buried in my passionate defence of Girls Aloud last week.

Dave: Sorry, albums of the year for me were Suede (would go with personality disorder as my top song off it), Sault - the today/tomorrow album (heal the world), Belle and Sebastian (title track for me), Fontaines DC (Jackie Down The Line). Some other great 2022 songs for me were Mysterines ‘Life’s a bitch’, Wet Leg ‘Being in Love’, The Big Moon ‘Wide Eyes’, Kasabian ‘Scriptvre’.

Dave: Take it this list can be amended/added to (bound to have forgotten loads)?

[2022-12-06 17:34] Scott Coulter: Best of 2022. We’re off and running!

John: I’m afraid 2022 has been a disappointing year for albums for me. I would nominate Sharon Van Etten, but at least 2 tracks are horrible - where she sounds like a drunk Susan Boyle trying to do Roy Orbison, which lets down an otherwise brilliant and moving album. Similarly Aldous Harding’s album had some great moments but some very very grating ones. For consistency, it might have to be Wet Leg. But I don’t want them to have it. So I am predictably going to nominate Sault’s 5 album splurge for sheer ambition and audacity, even though the quality was shaky in places.

John: Tracks of the year are easier. To follow…

John: Sorry I forgot about Sun’s Signature, the new Elizabeth Fraser project. It’s only an EP but many of the songs are mini-albums in themselves. “Golden Air” is my fave.

John: Other tracks :

  • Hot Chip - Down
  • Metronomy - Its good to be back
  • Belle and Sebastian- Unnecessary Drama
  • Jon Spencer - Junk Man
  • Wet Leg - Wet Dream
  • Ibibio Sound Machine - 17 18 19
